COLUMBUS — Special recognition awards were presented at the 2023 Student Recognition and Awards Convocation at Central Community College-Columbus.
Spirit of Excellence Award
Lorena Diaz Suarez of Columbus received the Spirit of Excellence Award, which is given to students who demonstrate exceptional character, integrity, commitment and perseverance in achieving their goals while also serving as a positive role model.
She was cited for her kindness, empathy, willingness to help fellow students, and ability to get along with everyone. She brought these qualities to her role as a tutor in the Academic Success Center.
“She is willing to think outside of the box to achieve the goals of being a tutor,” a nominator said. “She helps students be successful and understand difficult concepts and questions they may have.”

Exceptional Student Awards
One student is honored in each academic program. Recipients must have completed at least 30 credit hours and are selected for their good academic standing; strong classroom performance, leadership and citizenship skills; and demonstrated excellence in their major area of study.
Area students earning honors were: Bree Tumlinson of Central City, music; Samuel Gorby of Kearney, Spanish; Hannah Urban of Silver Creek, business administration; and Garrett Miller of Stromsburg, welding.
Appreciation Awards
Appreciation awards were presented to students who were officers, active members or award winners in various campus organizations during the 2022-23 academic year.
AG CLUB: The Ag Club promotes increased student involvement in agricultural systems and works to educate and inform citizens on the importance of agriculture. Area members include: Charlie Keehn of Belgrade, Kyler Kosmicki of Boelus, Luke Foland of Fullerton, Preston Gembica of Silver Creek, and Kaylei Kemper of St. Edward.
JUDICIAL BOARD: The Judicial Board is authorized by the campus administration to hear and judge cases involving student violations of rules and regulations in the residence hall and on campus. Nikie Nelson of Ord serves on the board.
PHI THETA KAPPA HONOR SOCIETY: Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society for two-year colleges. To obtain membership, students earn 12 hours of college credit and have at least a 3.5 grade point average. Area members of the CCC-Columbus chapter include: Treyton Cassell of Burwell, Brittany-Jo Hilger of Genoa, Kylie Hulme of Kearney, Jenna Cattau and Shaelyn Voss of Shelby, and Brianna Konwinski and Hannah Urban of Silver Creek.
STUDENT AMBASSADORS: Student Ambassadors are active in recruiting events and activities during the school year and summer months as well as provide leadership for incoming and returning students. Nikie Nelson of Ord serves as a student ambassador.
